This is just going to be a kinda Of Colour recording journal thing. We’re pretty
much like…80% finished with HALOS, and it’s been a crazy ride to get to this point. I cannot believe how amazing this record sounds already. I know I’m in the band so I have to say that, but really. When we first set out to record The Auriga EP, I had no idea that only 5 months later we would make something this beautiful.
Some of the songs on this record are sadder, more emotional. Some of them are more down to earth than on Auriga. The lyrics are a bit more direct and clear. I tried to not hide behind too many metaphors and cryptic meanings. I wanted people to understand what I feel and exactly where I’m coming from, which can be scary sometimes for an artist.
The drums are mindblowing. Shane is easily one of the most young and talented drummers around. His style has evolved since last time, especially noticable is the double kick work on the track ‘A Faint Flicker’. Zack and Austin’s chemistry is ridiculous on HALOS. Their guitars blend in and out of the mix with new delay and echo patterns, and sometimes with explosive rock and roll tones that we’ve never used before.
We’ve recorded everything in a more organic sense as well. We wanted to use technology as a tool, and less like a crutch this time. When we recorded The Auriga EP, we had to get everything tracked within a few days at most. This time around, we weren’t afraid to spend as much time as we needed; tracking and re-tracking until we got everything perfect.
The keys, sound effects, and synths have yet to be recorded, but we have some awesome ideas in the works for those too. Can’t wait to finish it all up.
